Long time no see!

Disclaimer: I apologize in advance as my writing style will be "stream-of-thought-with-not-much-editing-for-clarity". My focus is on the technology and not so much the writing. So, please forgive my loosey goosey style.

So it has been so long since I posted. Don't think that I was not busy because I was. In the last month or so, I've put together the fishtownfamilyandfriends website. Thanks to Colt Steele's "Web Developer Bootcamp" final project. I just passed a Linux course at work. I've been reading up on sed, awk and regexes. And in the future months ahead, I'll be studying to get my LPIC 1 certification. My goal it to be fully certified by the end of the summer. I think I can do it! 6 weeks for the first part and 6 weeks for the second.... or maybe give my self some time and breathing room. Maybe by the end of the fall. 12 weeks to study for the first part and 12 weeks to study for the second part.
Lastly, I was inspired by awk and playing around with that. I wanted to "show off" (again this is basic, I understand. but I'm super jazzed about this) I took a csv file from my credit card company with all the transactions over the last 90 days; 3 statements. Then I wrote (read: trial and error bounced my way around) the below script with gave the below output. Yikes, it is not pretty to accrue debt!
BEGIN {FS = ","} $3 < 0 { purchCount = purchCount + 1 ¦ ¦¦ ¦ ¦ purch = purch + $3} ¦ ¦$3 > 0 { pmtCount = pmtCount + 1 ¦ ¦ ¦¦ ¦ ¦ ¦ pmt = pmt + $3} ¦ ¦ ¦END { print NR, "Transactions in 90 days" ¦ ¦ ¦ ¦¦ ¦ print "===================================" ¦ ¦ ¦ ¦ ¦¦ printf ( "%8-s Total of %s purchases\n", purch, purchCount) ¦ ¦ ¦ ¦ ¦ ¦printf ( "%8-s Total of %s payments\n", pmt, pmtCount) ¦ ¦ ¦ ¦ ¦ ¦print pmt + purch " Balance Difference" ¦ ¦ ¦ ¦ ¦ ¦print (pmt + purch)/90, "per day" ¦ ¦ ¦ ¦ ¦ ¦}
[bennettnw2@nodeserver awk]$ awk -f apg amex_CC_data.csv 192 Transactions in 90 days =================================== -6174.16 Total of 186 purchases 4161.79 Total of 6 payments -2012.37 Balance Difference -22.3597 per day
